Louis Comfort Tiffany Mosaic Dome
Previous
Next
Unveiled on September 30, 1907, the dome is the world's largest example of an unbroken Tiffany favrile iridescent glass mosaic, covers 6,000 square feet, and containing 1.6 million pieces of glass. Built under the direct supervision of Mr. Tiffany, the dome is an example of his famous favrile process - a type of firing which allows glass to be made in an unlimited range of color and texture. The process of creating this dome took one and a half years to complete with over 60 artisans on scaffolding creating what one Chicago newspaper writer appropriately described as 'like Michelangelo in our Midst.'
