The screw pumps lift raw sewage approximately 22 feet to a channel above the pumps. From there the sewage can flow by gravity through the comminutor and remainder of the wastewater treatment plant. The pumps are in operationg 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. The lead pump is alternated weekly.

Raw sewage enters the screw pumps influent chamber from a 16-inch cast iron interceptor sewer, which originates at the manhole. The pumps lift the sewage and discharge it at the top of th raw sewage pumping structure. Each screw pump is dependent upon a grease pump to automatically lubricate and protect the screw's lower bearing.
