Rotating Biological Contactors

Settled sewage from the primary clarifiers flows through an 18-inch cast iron pipe to the biosystem influent box. There it is split between 2 rows of media shafts of 25' long. Each row consists of two shafts set parallel to the flow. The shafts are each split into two stages with a concrete beffle wall between them to prevent short-circulating of the flow. Normal density media is used in the first three stages of each row. High density media is used in the fourth. Biological growth on the rotating media is brought in contact alternately with the wastewater and with air. There is a total contact area of 458,000 square feet. As the wastewater passes trhough each compartment in series, it undergoes a progressively increasing edge of treatment by the growth in each compratment. The mixed liquor containing the sloughing of the media overflows the effluent into the through and allows for suspended solids settling in the secondary clarifiers.
